Windshield Wiper System

The windshield wiper system consists of these components:
- Windshield wiper, a modular assembly consisting of cowl top extension, wiper linkage, wiper pivots and windshield wiper motor. This assembly is non-serviceable except for the windshield wiper motor.
- Windshield wiper motor attached to the windshield wiper.
- Multi-function switch, which features a rotary wiper switch and a push-type washer actuator.
- Windshield wiper governor located behind the instrument panel above the opening for the instrument panel ash receptacle.
- RH windshield wiper pivot arm.
- LH windshield wiper pivot arm.
- Two windshield wiper blades.
- Windshield washer system.

Off/Low/High Speed
The two-speed, permanent magnet, three brush electric windshield wiper motor operates in this manner:
- A brush rigging permits selection of low or high speed.
- When the multi-function switch is in LO position the common brush and the blue/orange wire brush are used and the windshield wiper motor operates at low speed.
- When the multi-function switch is in HI position the common brush and the white wire brush are used. Electric current bypasses a portion of the armature winding, and the windshield wiper motor runs at high speed.
- When the multi-function switch is moved to the OFF position, the windshield wiper motor will continue at low speed until the multi-function switch outer contacts open. When the park switch contacts open, the windshield wiper motor stops in the park position.

The windshield wiper motor park switch is inside the motor gearbox.

Interval

NOTE: When using interval wipers, the first wipe may not occur until after a pause of up to 17 seconds.

When the multi-function switch is in the Interval (INT) position:
- The windshield wipers make single wipes separated by pauses.
- The control knob on the end of the multi-function switch sets the length of the pauses (from approximately 1 to 17 seconds).
- The length of pause decreases as the knob is rotated away from OFF and increases as the knob is rotated toward OFF.
- While in the interval wiper mode, it is normal to hear a slight ticking sound at the beginning of each wipe/pause cycle. This sound is from the wiper control module relay.
