Steering Column: Description and Operation

NOTE: All fasteners are important because they affect the performance of vital parts and systems. Their failure could result in major service expenses. They must be replaced with fasteners of the same part number if replacement becomes necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during assembly to maintain proper functioning of these parts.

DESCRIPTION
The steering column has the following characteristics:
^ The structural part is made of magnesium die castings.
^ It is attached to a support that is an integral part of the instrument panel.
^ The lower attachments are through a bracket that bends during steering column collapse.
^ A unique gearshift lever mechanism has been installed on the steering actuator housing. It has the insert plate located away from the gearshift lever and interacts with the gearshift lever through a linkage system. This system provides a positive interlock with no adjustments required.

FIXED COLUMN
These vehicles are not equipped with a fixed steering column. Fixed steering columns do not allow the steering wheel angle to be adjusted.

TILT COLUMN
These vehicles are equipped with a tilt steering wheel column.
^ A tilt lever is located underneath the multi-function switch handle on the LH side steering column.
^ When the tilt lever is pulled towards the driver, the steering wheel can be adjusted to one of five angles.
^ When the tilt lever is released, the steering column is locked into position.

STEERING COLUMN WITH AIR BAG
^ All steering columns have steering wheels which are bolted to the top of the steering column and are fitted with a supplemental air bag system.
^ Before performing work on or around an supplemental air bag system component, observe all supplemental air bag system conditions and warnings to avoid unnecessary air bag deployment and possible injury.
^ See Air Bags and Seat Belts for supplemental air bag system (SRS) conditions and warnings.
