Assembly






1. Install steering shaft into housing.
2. Install lower steering column bearing retainer and column mounting bracket. Tighten screws to 7-11 Nm (62-97 ft. lbs.).





3. Install suspension height sensor control ring, bushing spring and steering column lower yoke to steering shaft. Tighten pinch bolt to 25-35 Nm (19-25 ft. lbs.).





4. Position steering column lock lever actuator assembly in steering actuator housing. Spray upper and lower actuators with Multi-Purpose Grease Spray F5AZ-19G209-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M1C159-A.





5. Position steering column lock cam in steering actuator housing and install steering column lock actuator lever pin with small hammer. Tap steering column lock actuator lever pin in until flush with steering actuator housing.
6. Install one steering column position lock spring and steering column locking lever into steering actuator housing using a drift to hold in place.





7. Install the other steering column position lock spring and steering column locking lever with steering column lock actuator lever pin. Tap steering column lock actuator lever pin into place while driving out drift.





8. Support steering actuator housing in a vise and drive steering column lock actuator lever pin flush with steering actuator housing.





9. Place two nuts or spacers to hold steering column locking lever and steering column lock left hand lever away from steering actuator housing.

NOTE: Lube pivot bolts with Multi-Purpose Grease DOAZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESB-M1C93-B before installing.





10. Position steering column position spring on steering actuator housing. With assistant, install steering actuator housing and pivot bolts. Tighten to 18-26 Nm (14-19 ft. lbs.).





11. Install steering column bearing sleeve and steering column bearing tolerance ring over steering column shaft to upper steering column bearing.





12. Install steering column upper bearing spring and new bearing retainer on top side of steering column upper bearing spring using a 3/4-inch by 2-1/4 inch PVC pipe.





13. Install turn indicator cancel cam with flush surface up.









14. Install ignition switch. Align pin from ignition switch with slot in lock/column assembly. Position slot in lock/column assembly with index mark on casting. Ignition switch should be in RUN position. Tighten two retaining screws to 5-7 Nm (45-61 ft. lbs.)





15. Install steering column lock gear. Coat gear with Multi-Purpose Grease DOAZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESB-M1C93-B.





16. Install metal steering column lock housing bearing. Lubricate with Multi-Purpose Grease DOAZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESB-M1C93-B.





17. Install plastic bearing retainer.
18. Install transmission column shift selector tube. Coat bushings with Multi-Purpose Grease DOAZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESB-M1C93-B. Tighten screws to 7-11 Nm (62-97 inch lbs.)
19. Install shift control selector bracket.





20. Install shift lock actuator.
21. Install shift cable and bracket on lower column bearing assembly with two bolts (column shift). Tighten to 7-11 Nm (62-97 inch lbs.).
22. Install steering column in vehicle.
23. Install air bag sliding contact.
24. Install steering wheel.
25. Install driver side air bag module. See Air Bags and Seat Belts.
26. Connect battery ground cable and air bag backup power supply.
27. Verify steering column and air bag warning indicator operation.
