This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Ford Motor Company has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1996 Windstar, 1996-1997 Taurus, Sable and 1997 Continental vehicles equipped with AX4S and AX4N transaxles.

Safety Defect
The parking pawl abutment bracket has a sharp edge which may cause the parking cam to hang up and not engage the parking pawl in the parking gear. This may cause the vehicle to move even thought the gear shift indicator shows that the vehicle is in park. As a result, there is a possibility the vehicle could roll as if in neutral. If the parking brake is not set when exiting the vehicle, personal injury and property damage may result.

As noted in the Owner's Manual, it is recommended that the following actions always be taken when exiting the vehicle:

^ Shift the vehicle to park.
^ Turn off the engine and remove the key.
^ Set the parking brake fully.

Repairs
At no charge to you, your dealer will inspect and, if necessary, repair the parking mechanism on your vehicle. Dealers currently have instructions and parts ordering information.

How Long Will It Take?
The time needed for this service is about one hour. However, due to service scheduling times, your dealer may need your vehicle for a longer period of time.
