Front
The windshield wiper system consists of these components:- Windshield wiper, a modular assembly consisting of cowl top extension, wiper linkage, wiper pivots and windshield wiper motor. This assembly is non-serviceable except for the windshield wiper motor.
- Generic Electronic Module (GEM) connected to the rear of the fuse junction panel.
- Multi-function switch, which features a rotary wiper switch and a push-type washer actuator.
- RH windshield wiper pivot arm and LH windshield wiper pivot arm are attached to the pivot shafts of the windshield wiper with a nut.
- Driver side windshield wiper blade and passenger side windshield wiper blade are attached to the driver side windshield wiper pivot arm and passenger side windshield wiper pivot arm with a snap fit.
Off/Low/High Speed
The two-speed, permanent-magnet, three-brush electric windshield wiper motor operates in the following manner:
The windshield wiper/washer systems are controlled by three GEM-controlled relays.
The windshield wiper motor is controlled by two relays in the power distribution box:
- Low/High relay switches the windshield wiper motor between LO and HI speeds.
- Run/Park relay controls wiper park and interval (delay) functions.
- The windshield washer is controlled by a separate relay.
The GEM receives motor and washer fluid pump actuation input commands from the multi-function switch.
- One GEM input senses INT, HIGH, LOW or OFF mode request.
- The second GEM input senses the INT setting, single wipe and wash request.
Interval
When the multi-function switch is in the interval position:
- The windshield wipers make single wipes separated by pauses.
- The control knob on the end of the multi-function switch sets the length of pause from 0.7-21 seconds.
- The length of pause decreases as the knob is rotated away from OFF and increases as the knob is rotated toward OFF.
- Tap washer button once briefly to perform a single wipe.
- Hold washer button in to operate windshield washer pump.
If multi-function switch is in OFF or INT position, the windshield wiper motor will run as long as button is pushed in.
- Windshield washer pump wit stop immediately when washer switch is released or after 10 seconds.
- Windshield wiper motor will continue to run for three cycles before returning to previously set mode.
- If multi-function switch is in LO or HI position, the windshield washer pump will operate with no change in windshield wiper motor operation.
- If the washer button of the multi-function switch is pressed once briefly with the wiper switch OFF and the ignition switch in RUN, the windshield wipers will make a single wipe. However, the windshield washer pump will not activate. This is a mist feature.
