Pinpoint Tests
PINPOINT TEST - A. Parking brake will not apply.A1 - Check parking brake control
- Raise and support vehicle. Actuate parking brakes by pressing brake pedal.
- Did parking brake apply?
Yes - Adjust parking brake cable. Service as required.
NO - Go to A2
A2 - Check parking brake cables.
- Loosen parking brake cable tension. Actuate parking brake control.
- Did parking brake control actuate?
Yes - Service and adjust Parking brake cables. Retest system.
NO - Replace parking brake lever. Adjust parking brake cables. Retest system.
PINPOINT TEST B: PARKING BRAKE WILL NOT RELEASE.
B1 - Inspect operation of brake linkage.
- Observe operation of brake linkage as brake pedal is pressed.
- Check operation of brake linkage as parking brake release handle is activated.
- Is brake linkage operating properly ?
Yes - Go to B2.
NO - Adjust park brake cable. Service as required.
B2 - Check parking brake cables.
- Loosen cable tension as described.
- Move transaxle range selector lever to "NEUTRAL".
- Rotate rear wheels by hand.
- Did rear wheels turn freely?
Yes - Replace parking brake control. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
NO - Go to B3
B3 - Check front parking brake cable.
- Disconnect front parking brake cable and conduit. Rotoate rear wheels by hand.
- Did rear wheels turn freely?
Yes - Replace front parking brake cable and conduit. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
NO - Go to B4
B4 - Check intermediate cable.
- Disconnect parking brake intermediate cable. Rotate rear wheels by hand.
- Did rear wheels turn freely?
Yes - Replace Parking brake intermediate cable Restore vehicle. Retest system.
NO - Go to B5
B5 - Check rear parking brake cables.
- Disconnect parking brake levers one at a time. Rotate wheel affected by disconnected parking brake lever.
- Did rear wheels turn freely?
Yes - Replace suspect parking brake lever. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
NO - Diagnose locked-up caliper or drum brake. Service as required.
POST-CHECKS
- Parking Brake Control Stroke.
Verify that the manual release parking brake control lever stroke is five to seven notches when applied with a foot-pedal force of 98 N (22 lb).
- Apply and release the service brake pedal a few times and verify that the rear brakes do not drag when the rear wheels rotate.
