Cleaning and Inspection

CLEANING

CAUTION: Do not damage the head gasket surface or leakage may occur upon reassembly.

NOTE: The cylinder head may be cleaned with commercial hot or cold tank-type cleaners, with automotive parts cleaning solvents, or by steam cleaning.

1. Clean the intake and exhaust ports with a small wire wheel and a drill motor. Be careful not to allow the drill chuck to contact the valve seats.
2. Remove all gasket material from the valve cover gasket surface, head gasket surface, the exhaust and intake manifold surfaces, and the water outlet connection surface.
3. With the valves installed to protect the valve seats, remove deposits from the combustion chambers and valve heads with a scraper and a wire brush.
4. Use a valve guide cleaning tool and a small bristle brush to clean the valve guide bores.
6. Clean the cylinder head oil passages.
7. Remove all deposits from the valve with a fine wire brush or buffing wheel.
8. After the valves are removed, clean the valve guide bores. Use cleaning solvent to remove dirt, grease and other deposits. Clean all bolt holes.

CAUTION: If the valve springs (6513) are painted, do not use a wire brush or paint remover to clean them. They could rust, become pitted, and break.

9. Remove deposits from the valve springs and valve spring retainers (6514).

INSPECTION
Inspect the cylinder head for cracks in valve seats and ports, at coolant passage holes, and between combustion chambers.
