Disassembly and Assembly

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove exhaust manifolds, if required.
2. Remove spark plugs.
3. Remove rocker arm seat retaining bolts, rocker arm seats and rocker arms.
4. Clean carbon out of the cylinder head combustion chambers before removing the exhaust valves and intake valves.
5. Compress valve springs using Valve Spring Compressor T81P-6513-A. Remove valve spring retainer keys and release valve spring.
6. Remove valve spring retainer, valve spring, valve stem seal and valve. Discard valve stem seals. Identify all components to which cylinder they were removed and whether exhaust valve or intake valve.
7. Clean, inspect and service the cylinder head as required or prepare to transfer all usable parts to a new cylinder head.

ASSEMBLY
NOTE:
Assembly Lubrication
All intake and exhaust valves, valve stems and valve guides are to be lubricated with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A. The valve tips are to have Multi-Purpose Grease DOAZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specifications ESR-M1C159-A and ESE-M1C93-A applied before installation.

1. Install each valve in the port from which it was removed or to which it was fitted.

NOTE: Intake valve stem seals have a silver band around them while the exhaust valve stem seals have a red band. Make sure seals are on proper stem.

2. Install valve stem seal. Use a 5/8-inch deep-well socket and a light mallet or hammer to seat valve stem seal on valve stem.
3. Install valve spring over valve and then install valve spring retainer.
4. Compress valve spring and install valve spring retainer keys. Remove tool.

CAUTION: Do not install valve spring spacers unless necessary. Use of spacers in excess of recommendations will result in overstressing the valve springs and overloading the camshaft lobes which could lead to valve spring breakage and/or worn camshaft lobes.

5. Repeat procedure for all remaining valves.
6. Measure the assembled height of the valve spring from the top of the spring seat to the underside of the valve spring retainer with dividers. Check the dividers against a scale.
- If the assembled height is greater than 40.08 mm (1.58 inch), install the necessary 0.762 mm (0.030 inch) thick spacer(s) between the cylinder head spring pad and the valve spring to bring the assembled height to the recommended height.
7. Position rocker arms and rocker arm seats on cylinder head and install rocker arm seat retaining bolt. Do not tighten bolts. The bolts must be loose enough to allow the rocker arm to be rotated onto the pushrod.
8. Install exhaust manifolds, if removed.
9. Install spark plugs. Refer to Powertrain Management.
