Steering Column: Description and Operation
CAUTION:Replacement Fasteners
Suspension fasteners are IMPORTANT attaching parts in that they could affect performance of vital components and systems, and/or could result in major service expense. They MUST be replaced with ones of the same part number or with equivalent parts if replacement becomes necessary. DO NOT use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design.
Fastener Tightening/Torque
Torque values must be as specified during assembly for proper retention of parts. New fasteners must be used whenever old fasteners are loosened or removed and when new components are installed.
Bending/Heating
Never attempt to heat, quench or straighten any suspension part. Replace with a new part.
DESCRIPTION
The steering column is:
^ is of modular construction.
^ features easy-to-service electrical switches.
^ is designed for more efficient use of interior space and improved strength.
Fixed Columns
Fixed steering columns do not allow the steering wheel angle to be adjusted.
Tilt Columns
Tilt steering columns are fitted with a tilt mechanism that allows the steering wheel angle to be adjusted to suit the driver.
^ A tilt wheel handle and shank is located underneath the steering column on vehicles so equipped.
^ When the tilt wheel handle and shank is pulled toward the driver, the steering wheel can be adjusted to one of five angles to suit the driver.
^ When the tilt wheel handle and shank is released, the steering wheel is locked into position.
AIR BAG (SRS)
The steering column has a steering wheel which is bolted to the top of the steering column and is fitted with a supplemental air bag system.
^ Before performing work on or around any supplemental air bag system component, observe all supplemental air bag system conditions and warnings to avoid accidental air bag deployment and possible injury.
^ Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts for supplemental air bag system conditions and warnings.
STEERING COLUMN LOCK
The steering column lock functions to prevent the steering wheel from turning once the ignition key has been returned to the lock position.
