Steering Column
Removal
1. CAUTION: Do not remove steering wheel and driver side air bag module as an assembly unless the column is locked or the steering column shaft is secured to keep it from turning. This will avoid damage to the air bag sliding contact assembly.
Disconnect battery ground cable. Wait one minute for air bag diagnostic monitor to deplete its stored energy.
2. Remove steering wheel as described.
3. Remove the bolt retaining steering column intermediate shaft coupling to steering column lower yoke.
4. Remove two retaining screws from lower instrument panel steering column cover and remove cover.
5. Turn ignition switch lock cylinder to RUN position. Place a 3.17 mm (1/8-inch) diameter wire pin or small drift punch in hole in lower steering column shroud under ignition switch. Press retaining pin while pulling out on ignition switch lock cylinder to remove it from steering column lock cylinder housing.
6. Remove the lower steering column shroud and upper steering column shroud, fastened by three self-tapping screws.
7. On column shift models, unsnap and slide shift control selector lever boot up toward the end of the manual control lever.
8. Remove gearshift lever pin from manual control lever and remove lever from column.
9. NOTE: For vehicles equipped with overdrive lockout switch on manual control lever, disconnect wiring connector at bottom of steering column and remove wiring from column.
Loosen ignition switch connector retaining screw from column and remove connector from ignition switch.
10. Disconnect horn and speed control connectors.
11. Disconnect air bag power supply connector.
12. Disconnect interlock switch connectors.
13. Remove screws retaining multi-function switch and position out of the way.
14. Remove shift indicator cable from shifter tube.
15. Remove screw securing shifter indicator retainer from column adjustment cable.
16. Remove two front nuts from instrument panel support bracket. Remove two rear nuts and carefully lower column down.
17. NOTE: On console shift models, remove interlock cable and actuator.
18. Remove column from vehicle and place on bench.
Installation
NOTE: On console-shift models, install lock cable and actuator.
1. Install two rear nuts and carefully raise column up. Install two front nuts to instrument panel support bracket.
2. Install screw securing shifter indicator retainer from column adjustment cable.
3. Install shift indicator cable from shifter tube.
4. Install screws retaining multi-function switch.
5. Reconnect interlock switch connectors.
6. Reconnect air bag power supply connector.
7. Reconnect horn and speed control connectors.
8. NOTE: For vehicles equipped with overdrive lockout switch on gearshift lever reconnect wiring connector at bottom of steering column and install wiring to column.
Install connector to ignition switch and install ignition retaining screw.
9. Install gearshift lever and insert gearshift lever pin.
10. On column-shift models slide the shift control selector lever boot down the gearshift lever and snap in place.
11. Install the steering column shroud and fasten with three self-tapping screws.
12. With ignition switch lock cylinder in run position install lock cylinder into the steering column shroud.
13. Install instrument panel steering column cover with two retaining screws.
14. Install steering column intermediate shaft coupling to steering column lower yoke with the retaining bolt.
15. Install steering wheel.
16. Reconnect battery ground cable.
