WARNING:
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE. PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.

ISSUE:
The engine may stall when the transaxle is moved into the "Reverse" and/or "Drive" position with a cold engine and/or the vehicle may experience a surge or powertrain shuffle between the speeds of 48-72 km/h (30-45 mph). This may be caused by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration.

ACTION:
Reprogram the PCM using the latest level update CD-ROM calibration disc. Refer to the following Service Procedure and PCM Application Chart for the correct PCM calibration.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE:
REGIONAL APPROVAL MUST BE OBTAINED WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM. EMERGENCY ORDERS ONLY WILL BE FILLED AS SHELF STOCK OF PCMs ARE LIMITED.

1. Reprogram the PCM using the latest level CD-ROM.

NOTE:
THERE WAS A CATALYST CHANGE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MODEL YEAR ON 49-STATE VEHICLES ONLY. THIS CHANGE OF CATALYSTS AFFECTS THE CALIBRATIONS. THE TWO DIFFERENT CATALYSTS ARE ENGLEHART AND JMI. IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU GET THE CALIBRATION NUMBER AND THE PCM TEAR TAG NUMBER BEFORE UPDATING THE PCM CALIBRATION.

2. Refer to the calibration tag as well as the tear tag to determine which calibration to select when reprogramming the PCM. The tear tag is located as follows:

a. Atlanta built (VIN Code A, Figure 1): front side of the RH front shock tower approximately 51 mm (2") down from the top ledge.

b. Chicago built (VIN Code G, Figure 2): right side "A" post about 25 mm (1") above where the RF door wiring loom enters the "A" post.

3. Refer to the following PCM Application Chart with the calibration number and tear tag number to determine the correct PCM calibration.

Obtain an Authorized Modification Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
