ISSUE
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may be illuminated with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P1135 or P1155 in memory for vehicles with 3.0L or 3.4L engine. A long crank/slow start may occur for vehicles with the 3.4L engine. These symptoms may be caused by Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration strategy.

ACTION
Reprogram the PCM. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Perform normal diagnostics as outlined in the 1996/97 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) On-Board Diagnostics II (OBDII) Service Manual and service as required.

2. If concern is still present, reprogram the PCM with the latest level calibration using Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester. Refer to the PCM Reprogramming Information Chart to identify the appropriate calibration.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications.Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25Ipkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal.
