Disassembly and Assembly

DISASSEMBLY

NOTE If valve tappets and valves are to be reused, they should be returned to their original positions. Label or mark them to ensure they are properly reassembled.

1. Remove the bolt and the camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
2. Remove the eight bolts, the rocker arm seats, and the rocker arms.

NOTE: Always return the valve tappets to their original tappet bores unless they are being replaced.

3 .Remove the valve tappet guide plate retainers (1). Remove the valve tappet guide plates (2). Remove the valve tappets (3).
4. Remove the two bolts and the engine lifting eye.

5. Remove the (A) two bolts and the (B) camshaft thrust plate.

6. Use Seal Remover T92C-6700-CH or equivalent to remove the camshaft front seal.

NOTE: The camshaft can be removed in either direction.

7. Remove the camshaft.

NOTE: Identify all parts with respect to the cylinder from which they were removed and whether the valve is an intake valve (6507) or an exhaust valve (6505).

8. Use (A) Valve Spring Compressor T81P-6513-A or equivalent to compress the valve springs. While the valve spring is compressed, remove the (B) valve spring retainer key.
9. Slowly remove the valve spring compressor tool.
10. Remove the valve spring retainer and the valve spring.
11. Remove the valves.
12. Remove and discard the valve stem seals.

ASSEMBLY

NOTE: Use the seal protector provided with the replacement kit to prevent damage to the valve stem seals.

1. Install the valve stem seals.

NOTE: If installing the original valves, ensure that the valves are installed in the position from which they were removed. Coat the valve stems with heavy engine oil (SG grade) before installation.

2. Install the exhaust and intake valves.
3. Use Valve Spring Compressor T81P-6513-A or equivalent to install the valve springs, valve spring retainers, and the valve spring retainer keys.

NOTE:
Lubricate the camshaft lobes and bearing surfaces with heavy engine oil (SG grade).

Inspect for the presence of a clogged oil gallery. Verify that the camshaft contains the camshaft oil flow control rod and a cup plug is installed at the rear of the head prior to the installation of the camshaft.

4. Install the camshaft.
5. Apply a thin film of light engine oil to the lip of the camshaft front seal.

NOTE: The seal depth should be 0.05-1.0 mm (0.002-0.04 inch) below flush with the cylinder head front face.

6. Use Camshaft Seal Replacer T81P-6292-A or equivalent to install the camshaft front seal.
7. Install the camshaft thrust plate and the camshaft thrust plate bolts. Tighten the bolts to 8-13 Nm (70-115 inch lbs.).
8. Install the engine lifting eye and tighten the bolts to 40-55 Nm (29-40 ft. lbs.).

NOTE:

Lubricate the valve tappets with engine oil before installing.

Installing Tappets
Always return the valve tappets to their original tappet bores unless they are being replaced.

Component Orientation
Be certain the valve tappet guide plate retainer tabs are toward the rear of the cylinder head and the valve tappet guide plate tabs are toward the front of the cylinder head.

9. Install the valve tappets, the valve tappet guide plates (6K512), and the valve tappet guide plate retainers.
10. Install the rocker arms and tighten bolts to 23-30 Nm (17-22 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the CMP sensor and tighten mounting bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).
