Vehicle Damage Warnings
WARNING:Fuel Under Pressure
Fuel in the fuel system remains under HIGH PRESSURE for long periods of time, even when the engine is not RUNNING. To avoid injury or fire, release the fuel pressure from the fuel system before disconnecting any fuel line.
Fire Hazard
Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury
CAUTION:
Aluminum Components
Do not work on aluminum engine components until the engine is cold.
Cleaning Aluminum Surfaces
Do not use abrasive grinding discs to remove gasket material; use only plastic manual scrapers. Do not scratch or gouge aluminum sealing surfaces.
Component Locations
The location and orientation of each precision machined component should be noted. When engine is assembled each component should be installed in its original position. These components include:
^ Rocker arms, push rods, rocker arm seats and valve tappets.
^ Crankshaft main bearings and bearing caps.
^ Connecting rod bearings and bearing caps.
^ Pistons, piston rings and piston pins.
Accessory Drive Belt Tension
Drive belts (8620) must be properly adjusted at all times.
Loose drive belts will result in slippage which may cause a noise condition or improper accessory operation (e.g., the generator will not charge).
Over-tightened drive belts will place an unnecessary load on the accessory bearings and may cause premature failure.
NOTE:
Proper Procedures
When performing tests, adjustments, or service to the engine, ignition system, or fuel system, it is essential to follow the procedures and specifications in the appropriate service procedures, and in Powertrain Management.
Service Limit Specifications
Service limit specifications are intended to be a guide only and should be used when overhauling or reconditioning an engine or engine component. The specifications can help determine if a component is suitable for continued service or should be replaced while the engine is disassembled.
