Horn Switch: Service and Repair

WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when servicing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling an air bag.

WARNING: Carry a live air bag with the bag and trim cover pointed away from your body. An accidental deployment will then deploy with a minimal chance of injury.

WARNING: Place a live air bag on the bench or surface with the trim cover up.

WARNING: Never probe the connectors on the air bags. Doing so may result in air bag deployment, which could result in personal injury.

WARNING: Vehicle sensor orientation is critical for proper system operation. If a vehicle equipped with an air bag system is involved in a crash, inspect the sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail for deformation. If damaged, the sensor should be replaced whether or not the air bag is deployed.

WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before removing or replacing any air bag system components. To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait one minute.

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait one minute for the backup power supply to be depleted.

2. Remove the two air bag module screws from each side.
3. Disconnect the air bag sliding contact electrical connector and the horn electrical connector.

4. Remove the driver side air bag module.

WARNING: Place air bag module on bench with trim cover facing up.

5. Remove the (A) two steering wheel trim cover screws and open the (B) steering wheel trim cover.

6. Remove the steering wheel pad horn switch.

INSTALLATION

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

NOTE: When battery voltage is removed from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), all learned values will be cleared and reset to predetermined values. When battery voltage is restored to the PCM, the vehicle may exhibit certain drive ability concerns. It will be necessary to drive the vehicle to allow the PCM to relearn values for optimum drive ability and performance.
