ISSUE:
Some vehicles may exhibit a "clicking" noise when shifting the transaxle from one position to another (e.g., park-to-drive, park-to-reverse, etc.). This may be caused by movement between the outer driveshaft and wheel hub bearing mating surfaces.
ACTION:
Apply grease to both of the outer driveshaft joints and wheel hub bearing surfaces. This should reduce the possibility of noise being created from friction. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify the vehicle exhibits a noise when shifting the shift lever from one position to another.
2. Remove the driveshaft from the knuckle assembly following the procedure outlined in the 1997 Escort/Tracer Workshop Manual, Page 205-04-4.
NOTE:
THE HALFSHAFT DOES NOT NEED TO BE COMPLETELY REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE TO APPLY THE GREASE. THE TRANSMISSION SIDE OF THE SHAFT CAN REMAIN IN THE TRANSAXLE.
3. Apply a teaspoon of Mobil SP-1052 (or equivalent) grease to the halfshaft on the area indicated in Figure 1. The grease should be applied to the entire circumference of the surface indicated.
NOTE:
OBTAIN THE GREASE FROM EXCELDA MANUFACTURING BY FAXING AN ORDER TO 1-800-984-6874. INCLUDE SHIP TO ADDRESS, ATTENTION, PART # SP-1052, QUANTITY AND PHONE NUMBER. ALL ORDERS WILL BE SHIPPED C.O.D.
4. Reassemble the vehicle following the procedure outlined in the 1997 Escort/Tracer Workshop Manual, Page 205-04-7.
