Ignition Switch: Description and Operation
DESCRIPTION
The ignition switch, located on the RH side of the steering column, has four positions:
- LOCK: The steering wheel is locked. Except for the headlamps, parking lamp, brake lights, hazard flasher lights, cigar lighter, horn(s), and interior lighting, all other electrical functions are inoperable.
- ACC: All electrical accessories are functional.
- ON: The instrument cluster warning indicator function check is operational. All accessories have' power.
- START: The starter circuit is activated to start the engine. Once the key is released, the ignition switch will spring back into the ON position, disengaging the starter circuit.
OPERATION
The lock cylinder engages the ignition switch. The ignition key reminder switch will signal the safety belt warning chime if the ignition key is left in the lock cylinder and the driver or a passenger door is opened. The ignition switch cannot be moved from the LOCK position without the use of the ignition key. For vehicles equipped with a manual transaxle, the key must be pushed in to turn from LOCK to ACC. When the ignition key is removed, the steering column lock tab will engage the steering column to lock the steering wheel.
STEERING COLUMN LOCK
The steering column lock is integral to the lock cylinder. When the ignition key is removed or turned to the LOCK position, a small key inside the steering column lock engages with the steering column, locking it into position. When the ignition key is turned to the ACC or ON position, the steering column lock key withdraws, unlocking the steering column and allowing it to rotate.
