Steering: Service and Repair

DESCRIPTION
After performing any power steering system service procedure, follow the fill procedure to eliminate excessive steering system noise due to air trapped in the system.

INITIAL FILL

1. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors.

2. Fill the power steering pump reservoir.
3. Raise and support the vehicle so the wheels are just above the ground.
4. Crank the engine with the starter motor and add Mercon(R) ATF (power steering fluid) or equivalent until the level remains constant.

CAUTION: Do not operate the starter motor for more than 15 seconds at a time. Damage to the starter motor could result.

5. While cranking the engine, turn the steering whet from stop-to-stop. Check the fluid level and add fluid if necessary.

CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against a stop for more than three to five seconds at a time.

6. Lower the vehicle.

7. Connect the ignition coil electrical connector.

FINAL FILL
1. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes.
2. Turn the steering wheel from stop-to stop.

CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against a stop for more than three to five seconds at a time.

3. Turn off the engine and check the fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.
4. If air is still present in the power steering system, purge the system.
