Disassembly

NOTE: Thoroughly clean the exterior of the transaxle and dry it with compressed air.





1. Install Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B on the transaxle case. Position a drain pan under the transaxle.

NOTE: Position the transaxle in the Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B in its normal upright position.





2. Remove the torque converter and drain the fluid from the torque converter.

CAUTION: The torque converter is heavy. Be careful not to drop it.








3. Remove the oil pump shaft and the converter turbine shaft seal. Discard the converter turbine shaft seal.





4. Install Turbine Shaft Holder T88C-77000-KH.





5. Remove the fluid level indicator and oil filler tube.
(1) Remove the two fluid filler tube bolts.
(2) Remove the fluid level indicator and oil filler tube.





6. Remove the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor.
(1) Remove the TSS bolt.
(2) Remove the TSS.





7. Remove the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).





8. Remove the transmission range (TR) switch.
(1) Remove the two TR switch bolts.
(2) Remove the TR switch.





9. Disconnect the solenoid electrical connector.





10. Remove the fluid cooler tube.
(1) Remove the fluid cooler line bolt and washer.
(2) Remove the fluid cooler line nut.
(3) Remove the drain back valve spring.
(4) Remove the steel ball.





11. Remove the transmission fluid pan and the oil pan to case gasket.

CAUTION: Remove the transmission fluid pan before turning the transaxle over. This will ensure that any foreign material remains in the pan.

NOTE: Slowly loosen the transaxle oil pan bolts, working from the LH front corner to the rear, allowing the transmission fluid pan to gradually drop and the ATF to drain.

(1) Remove the 19 oil pan bolts.
(2) Remove the transmission fluid pan and oil pan to case gasket. Discard the oil pan to case gasket.





12. Examine any material found in the transmission fluid pan to determine the condition of the transaxle.

NOTE: If large amounts of material are found, replace the torque converter and check the transaxle for cause.

- Clutch Facing Material: Drive Plate Wear, Brake Band Wear
- Steel: Bearing, Gears, Driven Plate Wear
- Aluminum: Bushing, Aluminum part Wear





13. Disconnect the solenoid valve electrical connectors.





14. Remove the three oil filter bolts and remove the filter.

NOTE: Do not reuse or clean the filter, replace with a new one.





15. Remove the main control valve body.
Main control valve body bolt length (measured from below the head)
- A: 30 mm (1.18 inch)
- C: 50 mm (1.97 inch).

NOTE: Loosen the main control valve body bolts evenly and gradually.





16. Remove the throttle cable bolt.





17. Remove the throttle valve control actuating cable.
(1) Remove the throttle valve control actuating cable from the throttle control lever.
(2) Remove the throttle valve control actuating cable.





18. Remove the manual control lever and the manual control shift outer lever.
(1) Remove the manual control lever nut and washer.
(2) Push the manual control lever up.
(3) Remove the manual control lever and the manual control shift outer lever.





19. Remove the manual shaft plate and the lever holder.
(1) Remove the lever holder nut.
(2) Remove the manual shaft plate.
(3) Remove the lever holder.





20. Remove the detent lever.





21. Remove the detent lever spring and actuator support.
(1) Remove the detent lever spring.
(2) Remove the actuator support bolt.
(3) Remove the actuator support.





22. Remove the front pump support and gear and oil pump gasket. Discard the oil pump gasket.
(1) Remove the ten oil pump bolts.
(2) Remove the front pump support and gear.





23. Remove the planet gear thrust bearing.





24. Remove the forward and reverse clutch drum assembly.
(1) Carefully remove the turbine shaft snap ring.
(2) Remove the forward and reverse clutch drum assembly.





25. Remove the rear band servo spring retainer.
(1) Remove the servo piston cover snap ring.
(2) Remove the rear band servo spring retainer.





26. Remove the servo band piston.

NOTE: Use a C-clamp to compress the rear band servo spring retainer before removing the servo piston retainer.

(1) Remove the servo piston retainer.
(2) Remove the servo piston and servo piston spring.





27. Remove the primary sun gear and one-way clutch assembly.





28. Remove the 2-4 band.





29. Secure the 2-4 band with a small piece of wire to keep the 2-4 band from stretching.





30. Remove the 2-4 band actuating lever shaft and the servo band lever.
(1) Pull the 2-4 band actuating lever shaft while holding the servo band lever.
(2) Remove the servo band lever.





31. Remove the one-way clutch and carrier hub assembly snap ring.





32. Remove the one-way clutch.





33. Remove the wave washer.





34. Remove the carrier hub assembly.





35. Remove the clutch pressure plate snap ring.





36. Remove the clutch pressure plats





37. Remove the external spline clutch plate and the internal spline clutch plate.
- Inspect the external spline discs for burn marks, scoring, or warpage.
- Check for worn or damaged external spline clutch plates and internal spline clutch plates. Measure the facing thickness in three places and calculate the average. The minimum allowable internal spline clutch plate thickness is 1.4 mm (0.055 inch). The standard thickness is 1.6 mm (0.063 inch). If the plates are not within the specification, replace the plates.





38. Remove the ring gear retainer snap ring.





39. Remove the ring gear.





40. Remove the turbine shaft and 3-4 clutch assembly. Slide the 3-4 clutch off the turbine shaft after removal.





41. Remove the 13 transaxle case bolts. Split the transaxle case.

NOTE: Tap the two halves lightly with a plastic hammer to separate.





42. Remove the eight O-rings and discard.





43. Remove the output shell from the output gear.





44. Use Return Spring Compressor T88C-77000-RH to remove the low/reverse clutch assembly.
(1) Install Return Spring Compressor T88C-77000-RH.
(2) Compress the low/reverse clutch support and spring and remove the snap ring.





45. Remove the low/reverse clutch spring and support.





46. Remove the low/reverse clutch piston.





47. Remove the parking pawl.
(1) Remove the parking pawl shaft E-clip.
(2) Remove the parking pawl return spring.
(3) Remove the parking pawl shaft.
(4) Remove the parking pawl.





48. Remove the differential.





49. Remove the bearing housing roll pin.





50. Remove the bearing housing.
(1) Remove the ten bearing housing bolts.
(2) Remove the bearing housing.





51. Remove the idler gear and output gear by tapping them out from the torque converter side.





52. Remove the eight torque converter stator bolts and the torque converter stator.

NOTE: Loosen the bolts evenly and gradually.

53. Remove the converter housing from the transaxle holding fixture.





54. Use Step Plate Adapter D80L-630-A or equivalent to press the stator support out of the converter housing.





55. Use Step Plate Adapter D80L-630-A or equivalent to press out the bearing race.
