Cleaning
CLEANINGCAUTION: If these procedures are not followed, rusting of the cylinder bores may occur.
1. After any cylinder bore service operation, such as honing or deglazing, clean the bores with soap or detergent and water.
2. Thoroughly rinse the bores with clean water to remove the soap or detergent and wipe the bores dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Wipe the bores with a clean cloth dipped in clean engine oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-F.
INSPECTION
After the cylinder block has been thoroughly cleaned, check it for cracks. Invisible cracks may be detected by coating the suspected area with a mixture of 25 percent kerosene and 75 percent light engine oil. Wipe the part dry and immediately apply a coating of zinc oxide dissolved in wood alcohol. Do not use rubbing alcohol as a substitute. If crocks are present the coating will become discolored at the damaged area. Replace the cylinder block if it is cracked.
CYLINDER BORE
Check the cylinder bore for out of round and taper.
Measure the bore with an accurate bore gauge following the manufacturer instructions.
CYLINDER BORE TAPER
Measure the cylinder bores at points A and C as shown:
If the difference between measurements A and C exceeds the maximum taper value of 0.254 mm (0.010 inch), rebore the cylinder to oversize.
CYLINDER OUT-OF-ROUND
Measure the cylinder bores in the directions shown in the illustration:
If the difference between measurements exceeds the maximum out-of-round value of 0.127 mm (0.005 inch), rebore the cylinder to oversize.
CYLINDER BORE DIAMETER
Measure the cylinder bore diameter 32 mm (1.25984 inch) down from head deck at 90 degrees to the piston pin centerline.
