Engine: Description and Operation

WARNING: TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF PERSONAL INJURY OR DAMAGES TO THE VEHICLE, DO NOT OPERATE THIS ENGINE WITH THE HOOD OPEN UNTIL THE FAN BLADE HAS FIRST BEEN EXAMINED FOR POSSIBLE CRACKS AND SEPARATION.

The 4.6L (2V) (281 CID) engine is a V-8 design with the following features:
- single overhead camshafts (OHC)
- two valves per cylinder
- sequential multiport fuel injection (SFI)
- a center entry composite intake manifold on gasoline engine
- a rear entry aluminum intake manifold on natural gas engines
- aluminum cylinder heads
- a cast-iron, 90-degree V-cylinder block

The electronic ignition system has two ignition coils. This high-energy ignition system is required for fast-burn combustion.

The engine incorporates:
- a closed-type positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system.
- an exhaust emission control system.

To maintain the required exhaust emission levels, the following components must be kept in good operating condition and meet recommended adjustment specifications:
- engine
- fuel system
- ignition system

Make sure that the following components are not serviceable before replacing:
- crankshaft
- cylinder heads
- valve guides
- exhaust valves
- intake valves
- camshafts
- cylinder block
