Fuel Filter: Service and Repair
WARNING:- DO NOT SMOKE, CARRY LIGHTED TOBACCO OR AN OPEN FLAME OF ANY TYPE WHEN WORKING ON OR NEAR ANY FUEL-RELATED COMPONENT. HIGHLY FLAMMABLE MIXTURES ARE ALWAYS PRESENT AND MAY BE IGNITED, RESULTING IN POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.
- BECAUSE OF THE COMBUSTION CHARACTERISTICS OF GASOLINE, ALWAYS USE EXTREME CARE WHEN REMOVING AND INSTALLING ANY FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENT.
In-Tank
REMOVAL
1. Remove fuel tank.
2. Remove fuel pump module.
3. Remove filter mounted on fuel pump module inlet.
INSTALLATION
1. Follow removal procedure in reverse order.
In-Line
REMOVAL
1. Relieve fuel system pressure.
2. Raise vehicle on hoist.
3. Remove the push connect fittings at both ends of the fuel filter and base. Install new retainer clips in each push connect fitting.
4. Remove fuel filter and base and retainer from metal bracket by removing two retainer bolts.
5. Remove fuel filter and base from the retainer. Note that the direction of the flow arrow points to the open end of the retainer. Discard fuel filter and base.
6. Remove rubber insulator rings from fuel filter and base.
INSTALLATION
1. Install the rubber insulator rings on new fuel filter and base. Replace insulator(s) if fuel filter and base moves freely after installation of retainer.
2. Place the fuel filter and base into the fuel filter retainer with the flow arrow pointing out of the open end of the retainer.
3. Install the fuel filter retainer on metal bracket. Tighten retaining bolts to 9-12 Nm (80-106 lb in).
4. Install the push connect fittings onto the fuel filter and base ends in push connect fittings.
5. Start engine and check for leaks.
6. Lower vehicle.
