Flow of Diagnosis
Normal OperationNOTE: During normal operation, the air bag indicator will be continuously lit for 8 seconds after the ignition switch is placed in the RUN position and after 5 cycles of a Lamp Fault Code (LFC) if a fault exists. Be sure to cycle the ignition switch and look for a continuous indicator without LFCs.
The air bag Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) module will communicate Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) through the New Generation Star (NGS)Tester using the Data Link Connector (DLC). If the NGS tester displays NO COMMUNICATION when retrieving continuous DTCs, use this pinpoint test to troubleshoot the system.
Possible Causes
An air bag indicator that is continuously illuminated could be caused by:
^ the ECS module disconnected from the vehicle harness
^ the battery or ignition circuit damaged
^ a loss of ECS module ground circuits
^ the ECS module inoperative
^ the NGS tester damaged
