ISSUE

Some vehicles may hesitate on acceleration when the traction control system is activated. This may be caused by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) module calibration. Affected units were built through 4/1/98 and were built with ABS module bearing production part number F8AC-2C219-AB or F8AC-2C219-AC.

ACTION

Replace the ABS module with a revised ABS module and reprogram the PCM with the latest level calibration. Strategy revisions to these modules provide improved traction control performance. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

NOTE
THE ABS MODULE PRODUCTION PART NUMBER IS LOCATED ON THE INBOARD SURFACE OF THE ABS TRACTION CONTROL MODULE (NEAREST THE ENGINE COOLING FAN).

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Install memory saver, then disconnect battery negative cable.

2. Replace the ABS Module (F8AZ-2C219-BA). Refer to 1998 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Service Manual, Section 06-09, or the 1998 Town Car Workshop Manual, Section 206-09 for control module removal and installation.

3. Connect battery cable, then remove memory saver.

4. Reprogram the PCM to updated calibration using Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester. Refer to the following PCM Cross Reference Chart for correct calibrations.

NOTE
PCM REPLACEMENT IS NOT AUTHORIZED BY THIS TSB. REFER TO THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL/EMISSIONS DIAGNOSIS (PC/ED)
