Removal










Special Tool(s)


1. Remove the battery.
2. Remove the engine Air Cleaner (A/C).





3. On both sides undo the suspension strut nut five turns.





4. Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor electrical connector.





5. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
1. Remove the clamp.
2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.





6. Use wire or tie strap to secure the radiator.





7. Disconnect the ground cable and position it aside.
1. Remove the bolt.
2. Position the ground cable aside.





8. Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector.

9. CAUTION: Be careful not to spill brake fluid onto painted surfaces.





Remove the clip and disconnect the clutch slave cylinder hydraulic line.





10. Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder hydraulic line from the bracket and remove the push pin.
1. Remove the push pin.
2. Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder hydraulic line from the bracket and position aside.





11. Remove the upper bellhousing and upper starter motor bolts.
1. Remove the upper bellhousing bolts.
2. Remove the upper starter motor bolts.
3. Position the ground cable aside.





12. Install the special tools.





13. Remove the LH transaxle support insulator.
1. Remove the nuts.
2. Remove the bolts.
3. Remove the LH transaxle support insulator.





14. Remove the LH transaxle support insulator studs.
15. Remove both front wheels.





16. Remove splash shields (right--hand side shown).

17. CAUTION: Do not damage boot and wheel speed sensor ring




Remove the lower suspension arm ball joints from the wheel knuckle and the stabilizer link rod from the suspension strut (right - hand side shown).
- Disconnect the wiring harness bracket from the suspension strut.

CAUTION: To avoid damage to joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.

NOTE: Oil escapes. Close of the transmission openings with auxiliary plugs.





18. Remove the right - hand halfshaft and intermediate shaft.
- Secure the right - hand halfshaft out of the way with mechanic's wire.

19. CAUTION: To avoid to damage joints and boots, do not bent the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.

NOTE: Oil escapes. Close the transmission openings with auxiliary plugs.





Disconnect the left - hand halfshaft.
- Secure the right - hand halfshaft out of the way with mechanic's wire.





20. Remove the rear roll restrictor.
1. Remove the through bolt.
2. Remove the bolts.
3. Remove the rear roll restrictor.





21. Remove the front roll restrictor.
1. Remove the through bolt.
2. Remove the nuts.
3. Remove the front roll restrictor.

Vehicles with air conditioning





22. Remove the suction accumulator bracket bolts.





23. Remove the radiator splash shield.
1. Remove the bolts.
2. Remove the push pins.
3. Remove the radiator splash shield.

24. NOTE: LH side shown, RH similar.





Remove the radiator support brackets.
1. Remove the bolts.
2. Remove the radiator support brackets.

25. NOTE: Do not disconnect the starter motor.





Loosen the starter motor.
1. Remove the lower starter motor bolt.
2. Secure the starter motor out of the way using Mechanic's wire.

26. Remove the three-way catalytic converter.





27. Disconnect the shifter cables and bracket.
1. Disconnect the shifter cables from the shifter lever.
2. Remove the nuts.
3. Position the shifter bracket aside.





28. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector.





29. Remove the power steering hose bracket bolt.





30. Remove the power steering hose bracket nut.





31. Remove the power steering line bracket bolt.





33. Remove the left-hand steering gear to subframe bolt.





34. Remove the right-hand steering gear to subframe bolt.

NOTE: Secure the steering gear using mechanics wire before subframe removal.





Remove the subframe bolts and subframe.





35. Position Hi-Lift transmission jack and secure holding strap to transaxle.





36. Remove the lower front bellhousing bolts.





37. Remove the remaining bellhousing bolts.
38. Separate the transaxle from the engine and remove the transaxle.
