Removal





1. Disconnect the battery cables.





2. Remove the battery cables from the retaining clips.
3. Discharge the A/C system.
4. Remove the coolant reservoir cap.
5. Remove the power steering cap.





6. Remove the lower radiator shroud.
1 Remove the push pins.
2 Remove the two bolts.
3 Remove the lower radiator shroud.

7. Drain the engine cooling system.





8. Remove the engine oil filter.





9. Remove the drain plug and drain the transaxle fluid.





10. Disconnect the power steering cooler lines and drain the fluid.





11. On automatic transaxle vehicles, disconnect the lower transaxle cooler line.





12. Disconnect the lower radiator hose.





13. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.





14. Disconnect the A/C condenser line.
1 Remove the nut.
2 Remove the A/C condenser line.






15. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensors.





16. For manual transaxle vehicles, disconnect the exhaust after the converter pipe.
1 Remove the nuts.
2 Remove the hanger.






17. For automatic transaxle vehicles, disconnect the exhaust after the flex pipe.
1 Remove the nuts.
2 Remove the hanger.






18. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe.
1 Remove the exhaust manifold nuts.
2 Remove the crossover pipe hanger nut.
3 Remove the exhaust crossover pipe.

NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.






19. Remove the lower radiator support brackets.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the lower radiator support brackets.






20. Disconnect the heater core hoses and drain the remaining coolant.





21. Remove the bolts and right side, front inner splash shield.





22. Remove the bolts and right side, rear inner splash shield.





23. Remove the bumper to subframe brackets.
1 Remove the push pins.
2 Remove the bolts.






24. On automatic transaxle vehicles remove the flywheel access cover.





25. On automatic transaxle vehicles remove the four torque converter nuts,





26. Remove the A/C accumulator drier bolts and position it out of the way.





27. Remove the lug nuts and both front wheels.





28. Disconnect the LH and RH stabilizer bar link rod.
1 Remove the nut.
2 Position the stabilizer bar link rod out of the way.






29. Remove the LH and RH wheel speed sensors.
1 Remove the wire retainer.
2 Remove the bolt.
3 Remove the wheel speed sensor.






30. Remove the LH and RH brake calipers.
1 Remove the plastic caps.
2 Remove the bolts.
3 Remove the brake calipers.






31. Remove the LH and RH strut pinch bolts,





32. Disconnect steering shaft.
1 Remove the steering shaft pinch bolt.
2 Separate the steering shaft from the steering column.






33. Remove the water pump pulley cover.
1 Disconnect the hose from the clip.
2 Remove the screws.
3 Remove the cover.

34. Remove the air intake box assembly.
35. Relieve the fuel pressure.





36. Remove the safety clips and disconnect the fuel lines using a spring lock Coupling Disconnect tool.





37. On non SVT equipped vehicles disconnect the accelerator and speed control cables.
1 Disconnect the throttle cable.
2 Disconnect the speed control cable.






38. For SVT equipped vehicles disconnect the accelerator and speed control cables.
1 Unclip the cables from the bracket.
2 Disconnect the accelerator and speed control cables.






39. Disconnect the bulkhead connector.
1 Remove the bolt.
2 Disconnect the bulkhead connector.






40. Pull out the power steering reservoir and position out of the way.





41. Disconnect the powertrain control module.
1 Disconnect the ground cable.
2 Remove the bolt.
3 Disconnect the powertrain control module.






42. Disconnect the coolant reservoir hoses.





43. Disconnect the power steering line.
1 Remove the bolt.
2 Remove the ground strap.
3 Disconnect the power steering line and position it out of the way.






44. On automatic transaxle vehicles, remove the shiner cable.
1 Disconnect the cable.
2 Remove the bolts.
3 Remove the cable and position out of the way.






45. Disconnect the upper intake vacuum supply lines.





46. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.





47. Disconnect the heater control vacuum hose.






48. Disconnect the A/C accumulator line using a Spring Lock Coupling Disconnect tool.

NOTE:
- Support the transaxle assembly so that the weight is on the powertrain fixture and not the roll restrictors.
- If the powertrain fixture is not available, use a suitable lift and blocks of wood to support the engine/transaxle assembly.
- If the powertrain fixture is not being used, position the support so it will not interfere with removal of the four subframe retaining bolts.






49. Support the engine and transaxle assembly with a powertrain fixture or suitable lifting device having a collapsed height no greater than twenty-eight inches.





50. Remove the upper front engine support bracket nuts.





51. Remove the rear transaxle mount nuts.





52. Remove the subframe bolts.





53. Lower the engine/transaxle assembly from the vehicle, or raise the vehicle over the assembly.
54. Remove the halfshafts.





55. Remove the front and rear roll restrictor through bolts.





56. Lift the engine/transaxle assembly off of the subframe with a suitable floor crane.





57. Disconnect the starter motor wiring.





58. Disconnect the front heated oxygen sensor.





59. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor.





60. Disconnect the following electrical connectors and position aside.
1 Turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor.
2 Transaxle control connector.
3 Transaxle range sensor.
4 Position the harness out of the way.





61. Remove the upper transaxle bolts.





62. Remove the lower transaxle bolts

CAUTION: Do not let the torque converter drop out of the transaxle.





63. Separate the transaxle from the engine.
