Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators: Description and Operation
High Level Instrument Cluster Shown, SVT Similar
Low Level Instrument Cluster
The instrument cluster provides the driver with information, indicators and warning indicators on the vehicle systems.
There are two basic levels of instrument cluster, 'High Level' and 'Low Level'. Individual vehicle option's dictate the operational warning indicators, although the legends may be fitted not all will be illuminated.
The gauges and warning indicators may use the outputs from common sensors to carry out their respective functions.
This should always be considered when looking at any system which may not be functioning correctly, for example:
The electronic speedometer receives its signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted on the transaxle. Other systems which require the same input although some may be optional equipment include, Engine Management, Anti-lock Braking, Speed Control, Trip Computer, Audio Control Unit and Satellite Navigation.
Always consider and check associated systems for operation as this may save time when looking for a fault.
