Attachment III - Technical Information

TRANSMISSION RANGE INDICATOR BEZEL REPLACEMENT

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
1995-1998 CONTOUR, 1998 MYSTIQUE

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the selector assembly (shifter assembly) from the vehicle. Refer to 1998 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual, Section 307-05-29, for details.

2. Move the shift selector lever to position "D."

3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Section 100-02 of the Workshop Manual..

4. Remove the heat shield from the underbody.

5. Rotate adjusting cap to unlock cable adjustment.

6. Disconnect the selector cable (four nuts and end fitting).

7. Lower the vehicle.

8. Unsnap the shifter PRNDL assembly out of the console.

9. Disconnect the selector lever electrical connector.

10. Replace the PRNDL bezel. Refer to Section 307-95 of the Workshop Manual.

NOTE:
USE JAW PROTECTORS FOR ALL WORK DONE IN A VISE.

11. Disconnect the lower electrical connector from the selector assembly.

12. Disconnect the 2-inch O/D switch wires (green/black) from the connector by removing the red wire retainer out of the connector, disconnecting the wires and pulling them out.

13. Remove the selector lever knob screw and carefully pull off the knob while feeding the wires through the assembly. Use caution to avoid damage to the wire insulation.

14. Remove the lamp from the PRNDL bezel and remove the bezel.

15. Install a new PRNDL bezel.

16. Insert the lamp into the PRNDL bezel.

17. While holding the 2-inch O/D wires firmly, push the selector knob on the selector lever. Be careful not to damage the wires. If the selector knob does not slide on the selector easily, make sure the wires are routed correctly between the knob and lever.

18. Install the shift knob attaching screw.

19. Route the wires to the electrical connector.

20. Connect the wires to the electrical connector in their original position.

21. Connect the electrical connector to the selector lever assembly.

22. Install the bezel assembly by reversing Steps 1-9.

NOTE:
Do not unlock the selector cable adjusting cap.

23. Check indicator alignment (PRNDL indicator). If indicator does not align properly, loosen the shifter nuts and move shifter forward/backward as required.
