Attachment III - Technical Information
OVERVIEWWhen performing this safety recall you will:
^ Replace the two front crash sensors.
^ Verify proper operation of the air bag warning light system.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
WARNING:
TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY AIR BAG SYSTEM COMPONENTS. TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY TO STARTER RELAY CABLE AND WAIT ONE MINUTE.
1. Record the radio stations, then disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Disconnect the battery positive cable.
3. Release the wiring harness retainer pushpins located near the crash sensor electrical connectors. See Figure 1.
4. Disconnect the crash sensor electrical connectors. See Figure 1.
5. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
8. Remove the underbody splash shield (if equipped).
7. Position the radiator air deflectors (one on each side of the radiator) out of the way.
8. Remove the power steering fluid cooler retaining screws and position the power steering fluid cooler out of the way.
9. Release the pushpin retaining the crash sensor harness to the main wiring loom, and harness retainers from the grille opening reinforcement.
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. On Contour vehicles, remove the two retaining screws, then release the lower locking tabs and remove the grille.
12. On Mystique vehicles, remove the four retaining screws from the grille to allow access for crash sensor removal.
13. Remove the crash sensors.
^ On Contour vehicles, remove the crash sensor retaining bolts.
^ On Mystique vehicles, the crash sensor retaining bolts can be accessed through the openings in the grille. When removing the crash sensor, gently pull the top of the grille forward. This will allow sufficient room for removal.
14. Install the new crash sensors. Tighten the bolts to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).
15. On Contour vehicles, install the grille and the two retaining screws.
16. On Mystique vehicles, install the four grille retaining screws.
17. Raise the vehicle.
18. Secure the crash sensor wiring harness to the wiring harness retainers.
19. Install the crash sensor wiring harness retainer pushpin to secure the main wiring harness.
20. Reposition the radiator air deflectors to their original position.
21. Install the power steering fluid cooler. Tighten the bolts to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
22. Install the underbody splash shield (if equipped).
23. Lower the vehicle.
24. Connect the crash sensor electrical connectors.
25. Attach the crash sensor wiring harness retainer pushpins, then verify that the crash sensor wiring is routed in its original position.
26. Connect the battery positive cable, then connect the battery negative cable.
27. Program the radio stations.
28. Verify proper operation of the air bag warning light system.
