LAMP - INTERIOR LAMP STAYS ON

FORD:
1998-2000 CONTOUR

MERCURY:
1998-2000 MYSTIQUE

ISSUE
The interior lamp may remain on on some vehicles. This may be caused by a short to ground in one of the entry switches and/or the key cylinder illumination switch.

ACTION
Perform Diagnostic Procedure listed below for the appropriate vehicle and repair as required.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

1998 CONTOUR/MYSTIQUE





1. Check the circuits for shorts to ground. The circuits are accessible at the two connector blocks located on top of the central junction box or at the black 10-way connector on the bottom of the central junction block. Unplug the connectors from the central junction block and check the circuits for continuity to-ground.

2. If circuit is grounded, trace circuit to location of short and repair.

3. Check unconnected key cylinder illumination switches, Connectors C512 or C612, located in either front door for signs of water. Disassemble, clean and dry the connectors. Re-assemble and wrap with water resistant tape.

1999-2000 CONTOUR/MYSTIQUE

1. Prior to investigating potential shorts, make sure that the dimmer switch located on the dash is in the off/dimmer position.





2. Check the circuits for shorts to ground. The circuits are accessible at the two connector blocks located on top of the central junction box or at the black 10-way connector on the bottom of the central junction block. Unplug the connector from the central junction block and check the circuits for continuity to ground.

3. If circuit is grounded, trace circuit to location of short and repair.
