This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to apply only to vehicles with 2.5L engine, include the latest level parts, and include 1999 model year vehicles and Cougar.

ISSUE
Some 2.5L vehicles equipped with an MTX-75 transaxle may not move. This may be caused by the differential gear failing.

ACTION
Replace transaxle assembly. The revised transaxle has a hardened gear in the differential assembly to reduce the possibility of failure. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify transaxle will not engage any gears.

2. Check transaxle case for possible damage.

3. If damage to differential or transaxle case is found, replace transaxle assembly with revised Transaxle Assembly (XS7R-7002-CA) per the appropriate year Contour/Mystique or Cougar Workshop Manual, Section 308-03.

REFILL TO 1.9L (NOT 2.6L) PLUS FRICTION MODIFIER.
