THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE(S). PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.

ISSUE
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, and/or P0306 may be stored in memory with no driveability concerns present. This may be due to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration.

ACTION
Reprogram the PCM. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Retrieve, then clear DTCs from PCM continuous memory.

2. If DTCs P0300 through P0306 are present in continuous memory, perform normal diagnostics in accordance with the 1998 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual and TSB 98-18-8.





3. If no problem was found after performing Step 2 and no other DTCs were present, reprogram the PCM using Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester. Refer to the following PCM Cross-Reference Chart to determine the correct calibration.





Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
