Bearing malfunctions normally will be obvious at disassembly. Pinion bearing make a high-pitched, whistling noise, usually at all speeds. However, if there is only one pinion bearing that is malfunctioning, the noise may vary in different driving phases.
NOTE: Bearing and bearing cup must be replaced as an assembly.
If the bearing cup is spalled (1), the bearing roller(s) are spalled (2), or the rollers are damaged (3), replace the bearing.
