Removal
Special Tools:
1. Remove the halfshafts.
2. Remove the battery tray.
3. Secure the radiator shroud to the radiator support.
- Use wire or tie wrap to secure.
4. Remove the starter.
5. Install the engine support bracket.
- 2.5L, shown 2.0L similar.
6. Remove LH transaxle support isolator.
1 Remove the seven bolts.
2 Remove the battery ground cable bolt.
3 Remove the isolator.
7. Remove transaxle wiring harness.
1 Remove the battery ground cable
2 Remove the solenoid pack electrical connector.
3 Remove the Transmission Range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
4 Remove the wiring harness retaining clip.
8. Remove the three upper bellhousing to transmission bolts.
9. Disconnect the shift cable.
10. Remove the Transmission Range (TR) sensor.
11. Loosen the front strut upper mounting nuts five turns.
12. Remove the side bell housing bolts.
13. Raise the vehicle.
14. Drain Transaxle.
- Place suitable pan under the transaxle, and drain the transmission fluid.
15. Remove radiator air deflector.
- Remove the bolts and clips.
16. Remove RH, LH lower radiator support brackets.
- RH shown LH similar.
17. Remove the Three-Way Catalytic Converter.
18. Remove the air condition suction accumulator/drier bolts.
NOTE: If equipped with air conditioning.
19. Remove the transaxle cooler line brackets, and bolt.
20. Remove the steering knuckle.
21. Remove the rear sub-frame bolts.
22. Remove the two rear engine isolator bolts.
23. Remove the six power steering gear heat shield bolts.
24. Remove transaxle cooler lines.
25. Remove transaxle cooler lines.
- Unclip transaxle cooler line from hold down.
26. Install the LH/RH axle shaft plugs.
27. Remove the speedometer cable.
28. Remove the front isolator bolt.
29. Remove the front two sub-frame bolts and lower the sub-frame.
30. Wire the power steering gear aside.
31. Remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
32. Remove the torque converter rubber and the torque converter nuts.
- Remove rubber cover to gain access to the torque converter nuts.
- Rotate the torque converter to gain access to remaining nuts.
33. Install the Hi-Lift Transmission Jack, and CD4E transaxle adapter.
- Secure with the holding straps.
34. Remove the lower transaxle to engine bolts.
35. Separate the transaxle.
36. Install Torque Converter Holding tool.
CAUTION: Torque converter is heavy. Install the torque converter holding tools before lowering transaxle.
37. Lower the transaxle.
