ISSUE
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and symptoms may be stored in memory:
^ P0135, P0155 - Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen (HEGO) Heater - 3.0L 2- and 4-valve engines and SHO
^ P1138 - Key On Engine Running (KOER) - 3.0L 2- and 4-valve engines
^ Perceived lack of engine braking - 3.0L 2- and 4-valve engines
^ Spark knock - 3.OL 2-valve engines
^ Rolling idle - 3.0L 2-valve California Calibration only
^ OBDII misfire codes - 3.0L 2-valve 49-State Calibration only
This may be caused by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration.
ACTION
Reprogram the PCM. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Retrieve, then clear DTCs for the PCM continuous memory.
2. If a DTC P0135, P0155, P1138 (KOER) or OBDII misfire code were present in continuous memory, perform normal diagnostics in accordance with the 1998 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual.
3. If the concern is perceived lack of engine braking or spark knock, perform normal diagnostics per the PC/ED Service Manual for these concerns
4. If no problems were found after performing Step 2 or 3, no other DTCs were present, and concern is still present, reprogram the PCM with the latest level calibration using Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester. Refer to the PCM Reprogramming Information Chart to identify the appropriate calibration.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
