Cruise Control: Description and Operation

The speed control system consists of:
^ speed control servo.
^ speed control actuator cable.
^ Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
^ horn relay.
^ speed control actuator switch.
^ Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch.
^ speed control deactivator switch.
^ Speed control indicator.

The system operates independent of engine vacuum, therefore no vacuum lines are required.

The speed control servo:
^ is connected to the throttle body with the speed control actuator cable.

The electronics are integrated into the speed control servo.

The speed control actuator switch:
^ is mounted in the steering wheel and consists of:
- LH buttons (ON, OFF).
- RH buttons (RESUME, SET/ACCEL, COAST).
- necessary wiring.

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS):
^ is mounted to the transaxle.
^ is a magnetic pickup driven by a gear, which is driven by the transaxle.

The VSS signal sent to the speed control servo is proportional to vehicle speed.

The air bag sliding contact:
^ is located at the center of the steering wheel.
^ transfers electrical signals to the steering column wiring for the following:
- driver side air bag module
- horn blow switch
- speed control actuator switch

The BPP switch is a normally open switch that closes when the brake pedal is applied.

An electrical signal is then sent to the speed control servo and the speed control system is disengaged.

When the brake pedal is released, the circuit to the stoplamps opens and the BPP switch returns to its open position.

The speed control deactivator switch:
^ is a normally closed switch and a redundant safety feature in the system.
^ works independently of the stoplamp circuit to remove power to the speed control servo, releasing the throttle from servo control under increased brake pedal efforts (22-44 N engine running).
^ is attached to the brake pedal support.
^ has a plunger attached to the brake pedal arm.
