Vehicle Lifting: Service and Repair

LIFTING INSTRUCTIONS

CAUTION: When using a hoist to lift vehicle, make sure it is positioned only at points indicated in the illustration. Positioning at other points may cause considerable damage to body, steering, suspension, engine, braking system and fuel lines.

Hoisting And Lifting Points:

Drive On Hoist
To prevent possible damage to the underbody, do not drive the vehicle onto the drive-on hoist without first checking for possible interference between the upright flanges of the hoist rails and the underbody. Should there be interference, the hoist flanges should be modified and the approach ramps built up to provide the necessary clearance.

Frame Contact Hoist

CAUTION: All four contact points must contact the adapters.

On frame contact hoists, if hoist will contact vehicle ground effects, hoist adapters are necessary to lift the vehicle. The adapters must be placed at the four hoisting and lifting contact points shown in the hoisting and lifting points illustration. Position the adapters so they are centered on the contact area.

- Front adapter location is under floor pan reinforcements, behind the front suspension. Refer to the hoisting and lifting point illustration for vehicle contact points.

- Rear adapter location is under rear side sill, forward of rear wheel openings. Use a cushioned pad, if possible, to avoid damaging body paint. Contact with lower rocker panel trim by lifting arms will cause damage to panel. Keep adapters behind jack notch in rear side sill to avoid damaging parking brake cable bracket. Refer to the hoisting and lifting point illustration for vehicle contact points.

Do not allow the adapters to contact the rear suspension tension strut and bushing.

Single Post Hoist
When lifting vehicle with a single post hoist, hoist adapters must be used at the four contact points. Position the adapters so they are centered on the contact area. Refer to the hoisting and lifting point illustration for vehicle contact points.

Adapter location is the same as for frame contact hoists.

Make sure necessary clearance exists between hoist and exhaust system components before raising hoist. Do not allow the adapters to contact the rear suspension tension strut and bushing or the parking brake cable bracket.

Twin Post Hoist
When lifting vehicle with a twin post hoist, wheel adapters must be used under the tires.

Floor Jack

CAUTION:
- The service jack provided with the vehicle is only intended to be used in an emergency for changing a deflated tire. Never use the service jack to hoist the vehicle for any other service. Refer to the Owner Guide when using the service jack supplied with the vehicle.
- Under no circumstances should the vehicle be lifted by the front or rear control arms, halfshafts or front wheel driveshaft joints. Severe damage to the vehicle could result.

Raise the front of the vehicle by positioning a floor jack under the front floor pan reinforcement behind the front suspension. Refer to the hoisting and lifting point illustration for vehicle contact points.

The rear may be lifted by positioning a floor jack under the rear sill, forward of rear wheel openings. Use a cushioned pad, if possible, to avoid damaging body paint. Refer to the hoisting and lifting point illustration for vehicle contact points.
