ISSUE
Solvents that contain Acetone, MEK or Toluene will remove the printing from the Safety Certification Label. Most aftermarket refinishing solvents contain Acetone, MEK and/or Toluene. The solvents in question are not recommended for use as cleanup products, as they will soften paint. Despite warnings, some dealers continue to use them for this purpose. These solvents are also considered hazardous. The label is not damaged by approved cleaners such as Naptha, paint thinner or "wax and grease remover." The Safety Certification Label is located on either the driver's side front door lock pillar (B-pillar) or the rear latch surface of the front door. Removal of the printing nullifies FMVSS/CMVSS compliance and the vehicle cannot be sold. If the label is damaged, a new label will have to be ordered.
ACTION
Completely mask the Safety Certification Label during paint repair and leave masked during clean-up if using solvents which contain Acetone, MEK or Toluene.
