ISSUE
A "grinding" noise, brake pull, brake drag and/or uneven front brake pad wear may occur on some vehicles. This may be caused by an accumulation of corrosion on the caliper slide pins. This condition will only occur in "rust belt" areas or where high-levels of salt are used to melt roadway ice.

ACTION
Remove corrosion from the brake caliper slide bores, replace the guide pins, guide pin seals and front brake pads. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify the customer concern.

2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual, Section 100-02.

3. Unbolt the caliper assembly from the steering knuckle and remove. Support the caliper assembly so that the hydraulic hose is not stretched or damaged. DO NOT open the hydraulic circuit. Refer to the Workshop Manual, Section 206-03.

4. Inspect and measure the front brake pad friction surface for taper/uneven wear. If the friction surface is uneven by more than 3 mm, verify the caliper guide pins are functioning properly. The caliper guide pins should slide with a reasonable amount of hand force.

5. If the front brake pads show uneven wear (as indicated in Step 4), or the caliper guide pins are difficult to move, perform the following:

a. Remove the front caliper guide pins and seals.

b. Use a wire brush and/or rolled up sandpaper/emery cloth to remove all corrosion and foreign material from the caliper guide pin bores. Clean remaining debris from bores with Brake Clean (or equivalent) and shop air.

NOTE:
DO NOT USE POWER TOOLS FOR CALIPER GUIDE PIN BORE CLEANING.

c. Replace the front Brake Pads (F7CZ-2001-BA).

d. Reassemble the caliper sleeves using new Caliper Seal and Boot (F4CZ-2221-A) and Caliper Guide Pins (F4CZ-2B393-B). Use an ample amount of grease to lubricate the bores and guide pins. If additional grease is needed, use Ford Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound (D7AZ-19A331-A, Motorcraft WA-10, or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A+).

6. Road test the vehicle to ensure correct brake operation.
