NOTE: Ford does not provide camshaft gear timing marks, or information to perform timing belt service without the special tools shown in this procedure.
44. NOTE: The subframe must not move when tightening the bolts.
Using the special tool, align the subframe and tighten the bolts.
1 Insert the special tools.
2 Insert the suspension arm into the spindle.
3 Tighten the bolts working diagonally.
45. Align the engine and transaxle assembly.
^ Screw the center bolt into the special tool and tighten it.
46. Install the right-hand engine support insulator.
1 Install the center through bolt.
2 Install the bolts.
47. Install the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
^ Attach the retaining clip (one bolt).
48. Lower the vehicle.
49. CAUTION: Do not twist or strain the rear engine mounting brackets.
Tighten the nuts on the rear engine mounting brackets.
50. CAUTION: Do not twist or strain the front engine mounting brackets.
Align and tighten the front engine mounting brackets.
51. Install the coolant expansion tank.
^ Connect the speed control cable (if equipped) to the coolant expansion tank.
52. Raise and support the vehicle.
53. Remove the special tool and Install the engine support Insulator.
1 Install the center bolt.
2 Install the nuts.
54. Insert the brake booster vacuum hose into the intake manifold.
Vehicles with air conditioning
55. Install the suction accumulator bracket bolts.
All Vehicles
56. Attach the front exhaust tube with a new gasket and hook it in place.
57. Attach the power steering lines to the subframe.
58. Remove the fan motor and the radiator shroud from the radiator.
59. Working from below, loosely hook the fan motor and radiator shroud into the vehicle.
Vehicles with air conditioning
60. Attach the radiator to the condenser core.
^ Working from below, move the radiator into installation position (push fit at the top).
1 Screw in one bolt on each side (left-hand side shown).
2 Connect the connector to the fan motor ballast resistor.
All Vehicles
61. Connect the lower coolant hose.
62. Attach the radiator at the bottom and connect both H02S electrical connectors.
^ Secure the Wiring harness with cable ties.
63. CAUTION: Do not damage boot and ABS sensor ring.
Connect the lower suspension arm ball joints and the stabilizer link rod.
^ Attach the ABS wiring harness bracket to the suspension strut.
64. Install the fender splash shields (right-hand side show).
65. Install the radiator splash shield (nine bolts) and attach the bracket on each side (left-hand side shown).
66. Install the left-hand front wheel.
67. Lower the vehicle.
68. Tighten the front wheels (night hand side shown),
69. Remove the special tools.
70. Attach the fan motor and the radiator shroud to the radiator (one nut on each side, right-hand side shown).
71. Connect the hoses to the transaxle oil cooler.
72. Connect the two ground cables.
73. Connect the connectors and the upper coolant hose.
1 Connect the fan motor electrical connector.
2 Connect the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector.
3 Clip the wiring harnesses in place.
74. Attach the selector cable.
1 Press the selector cable into the selector lever and clip it in place.
2 Install the selector cable abutment bracket.
75. Raise and support the vehicle.
76. Remove the heat shield for the rear exhaust system.
77. NOTE: The selector lover has its own engagement system.
Move the selector lever to "D" and check the selector cable adjustment.
1 Hold the adjusting mechanism still.
2 Release the selector cable locking mechanism.
3 The markings on the selector lever must line up.
78. Lock the selector cable in place.
1 Hold the adjusting mechanism still.
2 Secure the selector cable locking mechanism.
79. Install the heat shield for the rear exhaust system.
80. Connect the throttle cable and adjust it.
1 Guide the cable into the abutment bracket and push on the plastic clip.
^ Hook the cable in place.
2 Pull the clip off the throttle cable.
^ Pull the cable out a few notches.
^ Fully depress the accelerator pedal once and slide the clip back on.
^ Check whether the throttle valve opens fully when the accelerator pedal is fully depressed - repeat adjustment if necessary.
81. Install the upper drive belt cover.
82. NOTE: Use an Allen Key to stop the piston rod from turning.
Tighten the suspension strut locknuts (right-hand side shown).
83. Tighten the suspension strut locknut with a torque wrench (right side shown).
84. Fill the transaxle with the same amount of MERCON(R) Multi-purpose automatic transmission fluid, meeting MERCON(R) Specification that was drained.
^ Insert the oil level indicator.
85. Connect the electrical connectors.
1 CKP sensor
2 ECT sensor
86. Connect the electrical connectors.
1 Automatic transaxle control
2 Clip the wining harness in position.
3 TR switch
87. Connect the wiring.
1 Main wiring harness electrical connector
2 Automatic transaxle ground cable
3 Secure the wiring harness using cable ties.
88. Install the air cleaner (ACL).
^ Insert the ACL (push fit).
1 Attach the rubber ring.
2 Install the air hose.
3 Install the crankcase ventilation hose.
89. Install the air intake tube.
^ Move the air intake tube into installation position.
1 Install the two clips.
2 Install one bolt and two nuts.
3 Install the IAT sensor electrical connector.
4 Install the MAF electrical connector.
90. NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.
Install the battery.
91. Refill the cooling system.
^ Check the routing of the vacuum hoses and wiring and secure them with cable ties.
^ Check the fluid levels after the road test and correct as necessary.
^ Check the engine and cooling system for leaks (visual inspection).
