Attachment III - Technical Information
AFFECTED VEHICLE:CERTAIN 1998 AND 1999 CONTOUR AND MYSTIQUE VEHICLES AND 1999 COUGAR VEHICLES
REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
1. Open the hood and remove the air cleaner.
2. Remove the clip that holds the accelerator cable to the bracket. See Figure 1.
3. Remove the accelerator cable end from the throttle body lever and remove the accelerator cable from the bracket. See Figure 1.
4. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the end of the accelerator pedal. See Figure 2.
NOTE:
The dash panel grommet is part of the accelerator cable assembly. After the cable housing is pulled out of the grommet, be sure the grommet is disengaged from the dash panel before attempting to fully remove the cable from the dash panel.
5. From the engine compartment, firmly pull the accelerator cable through the dash panel. If the grommet does not disengage from the dash panel, use a screwdriver from inside of the vehicle to push it out. See Figure 3.
6. Install the new accelerator cable in the dash panel.
^ From inside the engine compartment, feed the accelerator cable through the cable hole in the dash panel.
^ From inside the passenger compartment, pull the accelerator cable through the dash panel until the rubber grommet is fully seated in the dash panel.
^ Then, from inside the engine compartment, check to make sure the cable housing end is fully seated inside the grommet.
7. Connect the accelerator cable to the accelerator pedal.
8. Connect the accelerator cable end to the throttle body lever.
9. Position the accelerator cable to the bracket and install the clip.
10. Install the air cleaner and check accelerator cable operation.
11. Close the hood.
AFFECTED VEHICLES WITH 2.5L DURATEC AND 2.5L HO ENGINES
REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
1. Open the hood.
2. Remove the clip that holds the accelerator cable to the bracket. See Figure 4.
3. Remove the accelerator cable end from the throttle body lever and remove the accelerator cable from the bracket. See Figure 4.
4. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the end of the accelerator pedal. See Figure 5.
See Figure 6.
6. Installing the grommet and cable into the dash panel.
^ From inside the vehicle, feed mechanic wire through the accelerator cable hole into the engine compartment.
^ From inside the engine compartment, tape the new accelerator cable to the wire.
^ Pull the cable through the dash panel until the rubber grommet is seated in the dash panel. Make sure the grommet is fully seated inside the dash panel before seating the accelerator cable into the grommet. See Figure 6.
^ Continue pulling the wire until the accelerator cable housing is fully seated inside the grommet. (This will lock the grommet in position in the dash panel.)
7. Connect the accelerator cable to the accelerator pedal.
8. Connect the accelerator cable end to the throttle body lever.
9. Position the accelerator cable to the bracket and install the clip.
10. Check the accelerator cable for proper operation.
11. Close the hood.
