NOISE - "FLUTTERING" HEARD FROM HEATER PLENUM AREA - VEHICLES BUILT FROM 11/2/1998 THROUGH 12/22/1998
FORD:
1999 CONTOUR
MERCURY:
1999 COUGAR, MYSTIQUE
ISSUE
A "fluttering" noise may be heard from the heater plenum area. This noise can be created when the temperature control knob is in the 1-3 o'clock position and the blower speed in medium high or full high speed.
ACTION
Install a sleeve on the actuator shaft before its engagement into the blend door/bearing. The sleeve adds axial pressure to the door and should reduce the possibility of noise. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. With key on, set the temperature control one click from full cool.
2. Remove the cloth hush panel to expose the two bottom screws of the actuator and remove. Open the glove compartment fully by depressing the two release tabs on the inside. This will allow access to remove the top two screws of the actuator.
3. Pull the actuator from the blend door bushing and press the Anti-Rattle Sleeve (XS7Z-19D631-AA) over the output shaft of the actuator. There should be 3 mm (1/8") of the shaft exposed after the sleeve is pushed into place.
4. To install the actuator, line up the four screw bosses with the mounting tabs and the output shaft with the blend door bearing.
5. If the actuator does not engage with the blend door bearing, with the key on, move the temperature control to full cool, and then back off two or three clicks while applying light pressure to the actuator.
6. Reinstall the four actuator screws.
7. Reinstall the hush panel, and return the glove compartment to normal position.
