Removal
NOTE: The locations of engine mountings and engine support insulators are given looking from the transaxle to the engine.
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Put the gear shift lever into neutral.
3. Using the special tool, lock the gear shift lever in neutral.
4. Remove the air cleaner (ACL).
1 Loosen the clamp.
2 Disconnect the connectors.
3 Disconnect the vent hose.
4 Remove the retaining rubber.
5 Disconnect the inlet tube.
5. NOTE: Use an Allen socket to stop the piston rod from turning.
On both sides loosen the suspension strut lock nut five turns (RH side shown).
6. Use wire or tie strap to secure the radiator.
7. Disconnect the ground cable and position it to one side.
1 Remove the bolt.
2 Position the ground cable to one side.
8. Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector.
9. CAUTION: Do not spill brake fluid onto painted surfaces.
Remove the clip and disconnect the clutch slave cylinder hydraulic line.
10. Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder hydraulic line from the bracket and remove the push pin.
1 Remove the push pin.
2 Disconnect the line from the bracket and position to one side.
11. Remove the upper bellhousing and upper starter motor bolts.
1 Remove the upper bellhousing bolts.
2 Remove the upper starter motor bolts.
3 Position the ground cable to one side.
12. Install the special tools.
^ Raise the engine approximately 10 mm.
13. NOTE: Mark up the position.
Remove the rear support insulator.
1 Remove the nuts.
2 Remove the bolts.
14. Raise and support the vehicle.
15. Remove both front wheels.
16. Remove the fender splash shields (right-hand side shown).
17. CAUTION: Do not damage boot and ABS sensor ring
Disconnect the lower suspension arm ball joints and the stabilizer link rods (right-hand side shown).
^ Disconnect the ABS wiring harness bracket from the suspension strut.
18. Remove the LH support insulator.
1 Remove the through bolt.
2 Remove the nuts.
3 Remove the LH support insulator.
19. Remove the suction accumulator bracket bolts (if A/C equipped).
20. Remove the radiator splash shield.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the push pins.
3 Remove the radiator splash shield.
21. NOTE: LH side shown, RH similar.
Remove the brackets.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the brackets.
22. Remove the starter motor.
1 Remove the lower starter motor bolt.
2 Remove the starter motor.
^ Position the starter motor to one side.
23. Disconnect the front exhaust tube and unhook it.
^ Discard the gasket.
24. Disconnect the shifter cables and bracket.
1 Disconnect the shifter cables from the gear shift lever.
2 Remove the nuts.
3 Position the gear shift bracket to one side.
25. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
26. Remove the power steering line bracket bolt.
27. Remove the power steering line bracket nut.
28. Remove the power steering hose bracket bolt.
29. Remove the steering gear and the RH engine support insulator.
1 Using the special tool, remove the steering gear from the subframe.
2 Remove the support insulator from the bracket.
3 Remove the support insulator from the subframe.
30. Remove the transaxle bracket.
31. NOTE: Secure the steering gear using mechanics wire before subframe removal.
Remove the subframe bolts and subframe.
CAUTION: To avoid to damage the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
NOTE: Collect escaping oil.
32. Remove the right-hand halfshaft and intermediate shaft.
^ Close off the transaxle opening with Plugs for transaxle openings.
^ Secure the right-hand halfshaft out of the way with Mechanics wire.
33. NOTE: Collect escaping oil.
Disconnect the left-hand halfshaft.
^ Close off the transaxle openings with Plugs for transaxle openings.
^ Secure the right-hand halfshaft out of the way with Mechanics wire.
34. Lower the vehicle.
35. Using the special tools, lower the engine/transaxle unit until the transaxle is below the front side member.
36. Raise and support the vehicle.
37. Position Hi-Lift Transmission Jack and Secure holding strap to transaxle.
38. Remove the lower front bellhousing bolts (without three-way catalytic converter (TWC) shown).
39. Remove the remaining bellhousing bolts.
40. Separate the transaxle from the engine and remove the transaxle.
