Removal
1. Remove the water pump.





2. Remove the lower radiator hose tube.
3. Remove the LH Heated Oxygen (H02S) Sensor.
4. Remove the camshafts.
5. Remove the twelve hydraulic lash adjusters.





6. Remove the bolt and stud and position the water bypass to one side.
7. Remove the oil level indicator and tube.





8. NOTE: Remove the LH cylinder head with the exhaust manifold.

NOTE: Remove the bolts in the indicated sequence.

Remove the LH cylinder head, leaving the exhaust manifold attached.
^ Discard the gasket.





9. NOTE: Remove the nuts in the indicated sequence.

Remove the exhaust manifold.
10. Clean and inspect the cylinder head and cylinder block.

Installation





NOTE: The head gaskets must be installed over the cylinder head to block dowels.

1. Install a new cylinder head gasket.

CAUTION: Use care when installing the cylinder head. Damage to the cylinder block and or the cylinder head may result.

NOTE: Make sure the cylinder head is installed in its original position.

NOTE: Tighten the bolts in the indicated tightening sequence in six stages.





2. Position the LH cylinder head and install new cylinder head bolts and washers.
^ Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
^ Stage 2: Tighten 90 degrees.
^ Stage 3: Loosen 360 degrees (one full turn) in reverse order.
^ Stage 4: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
^ Stage 5: Tighten 90 degrees.
^ Stage 6: Tighten 90 degrees.





NOTE: Tighten the nuts to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) in the indicated sequence.

3. Install the exhaust manifold.
^ Position a new gasket.





4. Lubricate new O-ring seals with coolant and install the water bypass tube.
^ Use Premium Cooling System Fluid or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M971344-A.

5. Install the oil level indicator.
6. Install the lash adjusters.





7. Install the lower radiator hose tube.
8. Install the water pump.
9. Install the LH H02S sensor.
