Removal
1. NOTE: The location of engine mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine. Remove the front wheels.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Remove the hood.
5. Remove the bolts and the water pump pulley cover.
1 Remove coolant hose from clip.
2 Remove the bolts.
3 Remove the cover.
6. Remove the air cleaner (ACL).
7. Drain the cooling system.
8. Disconnect the accelerator and speed control cables.
1 Unclip the cables from the bracket,
2 Disconnect the accelerator and speed control cables.
9. Remove the selector cable.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Disconnect the cable.
10. Disconnect the bulkhead electrical connector.
1 Disconnect the electrical connector.
2 Remove the bolt and disconnect the electrical connector.
11. Loosen the Central Junction Box (CJB) and position it to one side.
12. Disconnect the cables.
1 Battery cable
2 Disconnect the electrical connector.
3 Ground cable
13. Disconnect the fan motor electrical connectors.
14. Remove four battery bracket bolts and remove the two ground cables.
15. Remove the battery bracket.
16. Relieve the fuel pressure.
17. Release the pressure from the fuel system by opening the pressure relief valve.
Using the special tools, disconnect the fuel lines.
^ Take off the retaining clips.
18. Disconnect the heater hoses.
19. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the radiator and from the coolant passage.
Vehicles with air conditioning
20. Disconnect the suction accumulator electrical connector.
All Vehicles
21. Disconnect the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) hose.
22. Loosen both suspension strut nuts five turns.
23. Disconnect the upper intake vacuum supply line and the heater control vacuum hoses.
24. Drain the power steering fluid reservoir and pull it out (push-fit) and position it to one side.
25. Disconnect the power steering lines.
1 Remove the bolt and the ground cable.
2 Disconnect the power steering lines and position it to one side.
3 Disconnect the connector
26. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the ground cable.
27. Disconnect the coolant expansion tank hoses.
28. Remove the coolant expansion tank.
1 Disconnect the coolant lever sensor connector.
2 Remove the bolts.
29. NOTE: Collect escaping oil.
Remove the upper transaxle cooling tube.
^ Close off the openings with Plugs for transaxle opening
30. Remove the fan (one screw on each side).
31. Raise and support the vehicle.
32. Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
33. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S) electrical connector.
34. Remove the dual converter Y-pipe.
35. Remove the dual converter Y-pipe (continued).
36. Remove the RH fender splash shields.
37. Remove the RH control arm.
38. Remove the inter-mediate shaft bearing with the RH front drive halfshaft from the transaxle and tie it up using Cable ties.
39. CAUTION: Do not damage boot and ABS sensor ring.
Disconnect the left-hand suspension.
1 Disconnect the stabilizer link rod.
2 Using the special tool, disconnect the tie-rod end.
3 Disconnect the lower suspension arm ball joint.
^ Disconnect the ABS wiring harness bracket from the suspension strut.
40. Remove the LH front drive halfshaft from the transaxle and hang it up.
41. Disconnect and remove the H02S electrical connector.
42. Remove the transaxle cooling line.
43. Remove the transaxle cooling line.
44. Remove the transaxle lower cooling line and the coolant hose from the radiator.
Vehicles with air conditioning
45. Disconnect the compressor electrical connector.
46. Remove the condenser core and tie it up.
All Vehicles
47. Remove the radiator.
48. Disconnect the H02S electrical connector.
49. Remove the coolant pipe.
50. Check the accessory drive belt tension.
1 Fixed cast lug
2 Moving stops
3 Belt tensioner
^ Adjustment is not possible.
51. Check the accessory drive belt tension (continued).
1 Right-hand stop
2 Drive belt
3 Tensioning direction
^ If the right-hand stop is touching the cast lug, install a new accessory drive belt during installation.
52. Remove the accessory drive belt.
Vehicles with air conditioning
53. Remove the compressor heat shield.
54. Remove the compressor bracket bolts.
^ Secure the compressor with Mechanics wire and position it to one side.
All Vehicles
55. Remove the LH support insulator.
1 Nuts
2 Center bolt
56. Remove the center bolt from the RH support insulator.
57. Lower the vehicle.
58. Using the special tool, install a Suitable floor crane.
^ Raise the engine slightly to prevent pressure from the support insulator.
59. Remove the upper front support insulator from the side member.
60. Remove the rear support insulator from the side member.
61. Remove the engine with transaxle to the top.
62. Disconnect the following electrical connectors and position to one side.
1 Transmission Range (TR) sensor.
2 Transmission control connector.
3 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
4 Position the harness to one side.
63. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.
64. Remove the oil level indicator tube.
65. Disconnect the starter motor and remove the starter motor bracket.
66. Disconnect the torque converter from the engine drive plate (four nuts),
^ Remove the plastic Cover.
67. Remove the RH flange bolts.
68. Remove the LH flange bolts.
69. Remove the lower flange bolts.
70. Remove the upper flange bolt.
^ Remove the ground cable.
71. WARNING: Do not let the torque converter drop out of the transaxle. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
Separate the automatic transaxle from the engine and install the special tool.
72. Remove the engine.
