This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to revise the part numbers listed for the Ring Gear Assemblies.

ISSUE
No forward engagement movement on some vehicles may occur although reverse engagement may be possible. This may be due to the Overdrive/Reverse ring gear assembly causing a wobble and side loading of the forward clutch snap ring retainer. This unintended load may cause the snap ring to disengage from its retaining groove. The Overdrive/Reverse ring gear assembly may be overlooked during repair and reusing it may cause a repeat problem.

ACTION
Replace the Overdrive/Reverse ring gear assembly together with any other damaged components found during a transaxle overhaul for this concern. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. If diagnosis and tear down reveals that the forward clutch snap ring has dislodged from its retaining groove of the Forward/Direct/Coast Clutch cylinder assembly, then replace the Overdrive/Reverse ring gear assembly with new Gear Assembly (F3RZ-7A153-B for 2.5L or F3RZ-7A153-A for 2.0L) (Figure 1).

2. As required, replace damaged clutch assembly components.

3. Inspect the pump driveshaft for integrity and replace as necessary.

4. Check for proper pump gear operation by inserting pump driveshaft into the pump assembly and rotating by hand.

^ If pump assembly is defective, replace it with new Pump Assembly (F7RZ-7A103-AA) and go to Step 5.

^ If pump gear operation is satisfactory, disassemble pump assembly to flush and clean contamination. Reassemble pump assembly with new Gaskets (F7RZ-7G331-AA). Go to Step 5.

5. Reassemble transaxle assembly.

6. Flush cooler lines before installing repaired transaxle.

7. Add 5.7-6.6 L (6-7 quarts) of MERCON Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) (XT-2-QDX) to transaxle prior to starting engine.

8. Start engine, check and top-off ATF to proper level.

9. Road test vehicle for final repair verification.
