ISSUE
The check engine light may illuminate with one or more Ignition Coil Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) that may include P0351, P0352 and/or P0353 with no associated Coil On Plug issues. This may be caused by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration strategy.

ACTION
Reprogram the PCM. The revised calibration should reduce the possibility of DTCs. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

When servicing vehicles with the check engine light on and one or more Ignition Coil DTCs (P0351, P0352, P0353), perform Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) diagnostics for that DTC. A DTC may or may not have an associated drive symptom. If no root cause is identified, reflash the PCM to the level in this TSB.

1. Perform the diagnostic self-test to check for DTCs. If any codes other than P0351, P0352, or P0353 are present, refer to the appropriate diagnostic routines in the PC/ED Service Manual and repair as appropriate.

2. Verify the integrity of the electrical connections at the ignition coil and spark plugs.

3. Using the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester only (this function is not available on Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS)), access the PCM identification function to obtain the part number of the PCM.

4. Use the PCM part number to identify the vehicle's existing calibration by referring to the following PCM Reprogramming Information Chart.

NOTE
IF THE PCM PART NUMBER OBTAINED HAS SEVEN (7) DIGITS, DISREGARD THE LAST (7TH) DIGIT AND USE ONLY THE FIRST SIX (6) DIGITS WHEN REFERRING TO THE CHART. IF THE PCM PART NUMBER OBTAINED HAS SIX (6) DIGITS, DISREGARD THE LAST (6TH) DIGIT AND USE ONLY THE FIRST FIVE (5) DIGITS WHEN REFERRING TO THE CHART.

5. Once the existing calibration has been identified, reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration revision level using NGS Tester or SBDS.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
