HEADLAMP - EXCESS CONDENSATION IN
HEADLAMP - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 5/24/1999
MERCURY:
1999 COUGAR
ISSUE
Excess condensation may build up within the headlamps on some vehicles. This may be due to lack of venting from the headlamp assembly vent tubes.
ACTION
Remove existing vent tubes and replace with revised vent tubes. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
NOTE
SLIGHT CONDENSATION IS NORMAL UNDER CERTAIN OPERATING AND WEATHER CONDITIONS IN ANY NON-SEALED-BEAM HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY. THIS WILL NORMALLY EVAPORATE WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF OPERATION WITH THE HEADLAMPS ON. IN CASES OF EXCESSIVE CONDENSATION WHERE IT DOES NOT EVAPORATE WITHIN 10 MINUTES, INSTALLATION OF REVISED VENT TUBES SHOULD MINIMIZE MOISTURE ENTRY INTO THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLIES.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the grille.
2. Remove the four (4) nuts/bolts attaching the headlamp to the body.
3. Disconnect the headlamp assembly electrical connectors.
4. Remove the headlamp from the vehicle.
5. Pull off the two (2) existing vents from the back of the housing and discard them (Figure 1).
NOTE
DO NOT APPLY THE SEALER TO THE NEW VENT TUBES OR BLOCKAGE OF THE VENT IS LIKELY TO OCCUR.
6. Apply a small amount of Instant Adhesive (E8AZ-19554-A, or equivalent meeting Ford Specification WSK-M2G351-A5) around the entire outer edge of the vents in the headlamp housing, ensuring no sealer plugs the opening.
7. Slip the new Vent Tubes (98BZ-13220-AA) over the vents with the baffled end pointing downward (Figure 2).
8. Reinstall the headlamp by reversing Steps 1-3, then repeat for the other side. It is not necessary to realign the headlamps upon completion.
