Fuel Pump: Description and Operation
WARNING: THE UNLEADED GASOLINE FUEL PUMP MUST NOT BE SUBSTITUTED FOR THE FLEXIBLE FUEL VEHICLE FUEL PUMP, OR PREMATURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE WILL OCCUR.
NOTE: The FF vehicle fuel pump operates in the same way as an unleaded gasoline fuel pump but is made of ethanol compatible materials.
The fuel pump :
- is mounted to the fuel tank and contains the fuel level sensor.
- incorporates an internal reservoir to permit operation on steep grades with low fuel levels.
- provides fuel flow of:
- 120 liters per hour (31.7 gallons per hour)
- contains an internal check valve to maintain system pressure after the engine is shut off.
- contains a pressure relief valve to provide overpressure protection in the event of a fuel line restriction.
- is protected by a nylon inlet filter.
- is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which provides power through the Inertia Fuel Shutoff switch (IFS switch).
- is shut off when the powertrain control module senses engine speed is below 120 rpm.
