Post-Collision Inspection
While servicing an air bag-equipped vehicle that has been involved in a collision, check air bag Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) module and wiring.Sensors
The air bag Electronic Crash Sensor module orientation is critical for proper air bag system operation. If a vehicle equipped with a driver air bag module and passenger air bag module is involved in a crash where the center tunnel area has been damaged, make sure that body structure in the area of the sensor mounting is restored to its original condition. Inspect the mounting and bracket for deformation.
- Damaged ECS modules should be replaced whether or not the driver air bag module or passenger air bag module is deployed.
- ECS modules must be replaced if the air bags have deployed.
Steering Column and Air Bag Sliding Contact
If the collision involved deployment of driver air bag module or passenger air bag module, the steering column may have been loaded sufficiently to deform steering column mounting brackets or damage column wiring. An inspection should be made of the column structure and air bag sliding contact wiring to make sure that any damaged components are installed new.
